The Legend of the Blue Hole by Roy L. Wachter
The Legend of the Blue Hole by Roy L. Wachter

In the spring of 1913, perhaps the worst spring in the history of Washington, Indiana, record-breaking floodwaters cause personal tragedy for many families. Fear grips many railroad families when a trestle is swept away, endangering the lives of eighty workmen who have been frantically stacking sandbags along the railroad embankment.

The floodwaters cause many railroad passengers to be stranded in Washington. The city is isolated, out of drinking water, crowded with evacuees from the surrounding low-lying farms, and rapidly running out of food. Joseph Saylor, one of the stranded passengers, is an eighteen-year-old soldier on leave. Joseph spends most of his time exploring Washington.

During the months prior to the disaster, Thomas Wingate and Amelia MacAtee meet, fall in love, and plan to marry. Thomas' good fortune and the events surrounding the Blue Hole tragedy threaten to destroy their relationship.

Super local historical read!

Julie M. (Riker) Dant - 21st September 2009

As I was entering the Evansville, Indiana Barnes and Noble bookstore I noticed right away the title of this book. It caught my eye not only for the subject matter in the title, "the Blue Hole" which is a well known area in Washington, but by the author's name as well. I only knew one man by the name of Wachter and he just happened to be my Freshman biology teacher in 1966 whom I remember as being one of my most favorite teachers. Needless to say I purchased a copy right then and began reading it by the map light on the way home to Washington after dark. All I can say is it was a good thing that I did not have to work the next day, for I read this book through to it's end that night!
No one can be disappointed after reading The Legend of the Blue Hole.
I recommend it to anyone I know who is a reader. You do not have to be interested in local history, either, to thoroughly enjoy this read!
Congratulations, Mr. Wachter! I give you an A+!!
